Read Hard

Now I lay me down to sleep...

I read in bed, so I try to stay away from scary books. Sleepless by Terri Clark is not nearly as cute and campy as the cover may make you believe. I knew this, and yet I still could not put it down. I had to follow Trinity as she she dreamwalked with a deranged killer. I had to know how she would stop him. (I also had to know what would happen with her and the hunky guy sharing her hotel room!). The ending will not disappoint!

Thursday Morning Book Club

The Back-2-School Edition:

"dark comedy...boisterous satire of pseudointellectuals, impotent writers and the adult extension programs of public universities" Plus the main character's lectures "constitute a damn fine guide to writing fiction." --PW

and

“The author mows down worlds of artistic and psychological twaddle with killer sprays of language. Willett is effortlessly, furiously funny. . . . ”---Entertainment Weekly

Not YA...but darkly funny AND a writing guide? How can I resist?

3 Things....

3 Things... You will always find in one of my books:

1. A Horse

I buy a lot of books simply because they have a horse on the cover, but sometimes I find that I've been duped, because there isn't a horse anywhere inside. So, in every single book I will have a horse, somewhere, somehow. It's my small way of giving back all that has been taken...

2. A made up Slang Word

Yes, I secretly hope that my little made up word will catch on and go far in life....

3. The expression "heaved a sigh"

One of my crit partners (*cough* *cough* Jordan *cough* *cough* Dane) had her characters heaving sighs right and left, I just find it funny.

Is there anything you always put in your novels or anything you notice that is funny that you want me to put in mine?

It's Friday...I'm in LOVE!

....with Hal Sparks!!!

He's Hot!
He rocks!
He's hysterical!
And nothing makes me fall in love faster than a man in a kilt! Make it camo and add combat boots and aye, baby!

Check it Out

Thursday Morning Book Club

With summer almost over (seriously?) and my stint as "Blog Mom" at the 2k8 blog coming to a close, I'm ready to get back to the routine, starting with Thursday Morning Book Club... and not coincidentally a box from Amazon just arrived on my doorstep!

REAL WORLD by Natsuo Kirino:

"Psychologically intricate and astute, dark and unflinching, Real World is a searing, eye-opening portrait of teenage life in Japan unlike any we have seen before."

Those who know me, know I like me some dark and unflinching, throw in psychologically intricate and you have a Brooke Taylor Must Buy.

The Summer of Naked Swim Parties by Jessica Anya Blau:

"Sadly, not a photo essay, but rather a witty account of the agonies and ecstasies of a girl coming of age in late-seventies California." New York magazine

Naked Swim Parties, enough said.

Check it out!

My cover story at Melissa Walker's blog:

All about how boring and stupid my cover ideas were--but in my defense, I had no idea their idea would be so perfect and brilliant! :-P

Slacking Again--Look, it's a PUPPY!

Ah, yes, I relaize I have not been a very good blogger. And, in fact, I don't have anything to blog about for you. Yes, I will have soon because I had sooooo much fun personal shopping for Breanna in San Fran and I have pictures to pass along of that! But until I get organized, I shall entertain you with pics of Miss Roxy! It was sooooo hard to leave her--it felt like when I left she was this big:

And when I got home she was this BIG:
I swear they grow up so fast! She's getting in her adult teeth, and while I'm not too sorry about those little razors of hers falling out, it does mean she's becoming, well, an adult. Scary! She was wonderful for my Mom (aka Nanna). But then again, she's used to spending the work week at Nanna's. In fact it is so doggy friendly we refer to it as Nanna's Dog Park & Day Spa. Check it out:
Daily soaks in the mud pool (shhh, I think she's sleeping)...
Off leash trail hikes with a refreshing skinny dips in the lake. Cute butt shot, no?
